Teemu Titola and Jasmi Kantomaa-Titola had dreamed of their own home for a couple of years before they found a suitable plot in Teemu’s home village of Keväjärvi in Inari, located in the traditional territory of the Skolt Sámi. The PolarHouse thermal log home built on the plot was completed in February 2023.
“We had plenty of time to design the floor plan while searching for a plot. I browsed and browsed floor plans from log home manufacturers, but none of them felt right. We also found out that many home builders don’t deliver north of Saariselkä,” Jasmi recalls about the early stages of their building project.
A Tailored Solution from PolarHouse
Then the couple heard about PolarHouse through acquaintances. When Jasmi and Teemu found out that PolarHouse also offers customized home solutions, the decision to go with them was made quickly and planning progressed rapidly.
“We were able to design the house based on our own drawings. I sent my floor plan to sales representative Olavi Vanhapiha, and PolarHouse created the construction drawings and renderings based on that. Thanks to Olavi, we received flexible customer service and a lot of great advice.”
Local Builders Supported the Young Family
For the construction, the couple relied on local professionals.
“We started groundwork in May 2022, and PolarHouse delivered the house kit in August. Then a local contractor assembled the house in a few days, after which we continued with the interior work ourselves.”
The project was made easier by the fact that Teemu, being a professional in the field, could handle some of the electrical work. Additional help was needed, for example, for building interior walls and installing fixed furniture. The schedule got tighter when the couple’s first child was born prematurely.
“Fortunately, we were able to have a kitchen company install the kitchen and utility room while we were in the hospital giving birth. After coming home, we finished the interior work within a couple of months before the final inspection and moving day,” Jasmi recalls.
A Modern Log Home Tailored to Family Life
After moving in, the family — now grown to four — has been very happy with the house’s layout. The home has 115 square meters of living space, 3 bedrooms, and a spacious, high-ceilinged open-plan living room and kitchen.
“With many home builders, all the bedrooms are placed on the same wall. We wanted the parents’ and children’s rooms on opposite sides of the house, and that has worked well. The large 43-square-meter open space combining the living room, kitchen, and hallway has a high, open ceiling. We especially like the open design because I enjoy cooking and entertaining friends. It’s nice to cook and socialize at the same time.”
House Kits Save Time
The family has enjoyed their home and has recommended PolarHouse to others considering building.
“We got exactly the kind of house we had planned. The delivery went smoothly. We only had to order extra trim once, and it arrived the very next day. I had assumed we’d need to order a waste container for construction debris, but it turned out we didn’t because all the building materials were precisely measured and very little waste was generated.”
The couple is especially glad they didn’t try to build the house entirely on their own.
“We considered what we could realistically do ourselves. In the end, we realized that building while working would have consumed all our free time. We didn’t want to go down that road, since our own time also has value,” Jasmi explains.
